VERIFY: Is The Condom-Snorting Challenge Real?

When it came to the recent "condom-snorting challenge" headlines, some things just weren't adding up.

Austin — AUSTIN -- It's been the topic of headlines all week, reading things like:

"In case you missed the 'condom-snorting challenge' - and didn't know it's a bad idea."

"Teens are SNORTING entire condoms up their nose and out their mouth in the latest dangerous social media trend the 'condom challenge.'"

"Teens snort condoms then pull them through mouths in disturbing new trend."

All those articles were posted within the last week -- and all dealt with the same topic, an alleged "new" challenge where children and teens were inserting a condom into one of their nostrils then inhaling and pulling the condom through their sinuses and out of their mouths.

But is any of it real?

Well, part is true.

Teens have put condoms in their noses in the past. There are dozens of videos of the act on Facebook and YouTube. The problem? They aren't recent.

Turns out, this was a "viral trend" back in 2012 to 2014. But as of April 2, 2018, there was no evidence that it was being started up again.

A search of Google Trends show that since 2012 to 2014, only a handful of people have ever searched for this challenge, much less posted it happening.

We can verify that this is an old trend, but the claims that it's coming back and teens are doing this challenge today are false.

(It is important to note that inserting anything, condom or otherwise, into your sinuses can damage the delicate tissue.)
