ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter tweeted Tuesday that the first-year receiver suffered ligament damage in his ankle during Monday’s 45-21 victory over Miami and will be shut down for the remainder of the season.
The Panthers announced the second-round pick will undergo season-ending ankle surgery and will be placed on injured reserve.
Through nine games, Samuel had 15 receptions for 115 yards. Samuel had five receptions for 45 yards against Miami. He was injured in the third quarter of Monday’s game after dropping what would’ve been a touchdown.
Head coach Ron Rivera said things weren’t very optimistic about Samuel’s ankle before an MRI Tuesday afternoon.
The Panthers are on bye next week before visiting the New York Jets, in what is expected to be the return of veteran tight end Greg Olsen.
