Burlington, NC -- A Piedmont company makes more than athletic wear, uniforms and hospital garments. Royal Park USA also provides jobs for the visually impaired.
"We make a wide range of products from simple t-shirts to outerwear jacked that would sell for $500," said William Park of Royal Park USA.
The products are shipped to retailers, shops and online distributors all over the country, including Alaska. Recently, the company that's been in business for more than 35 years changed its name. It was called Royal Park Sewing. The new name, Royal Park USA, emphasizes the company's products that are made in America.
It also has a new partner, Industries of the Blind in Greensboro.
"This gives us the opportunity to bring more people who are visually impaired into the workforce," said David LoPresti, president of Industries of the Blind.
Royal Park USA employs about 40 people. The goal is to add as many as sixty more by the end of the year. Currently, five of the employees are visually impaired.
Tim Poole is a new employee who's quickly learning the ropes. He's one of the workers who is visually impaired.
"I'm enjoying meeting people and enjoying the work itself. I'm just now starting out on this. It didn't take me long to get used to it and how it works," said Poole.
Eventually, 50-60-percent of the workforce will be visually impaired in a wide variety of jobs.
"A full array of skills. Everywhere from order entry, customer service, manufacturing. You name it, this is a full manufacturing facility," said LoPresti.
It's facility that makes more than just clothing. It's a business that's creating opportunity.
It's very rewarding to me to be part of this that provides independence and stability to the visually impaired and to be part of creating jobs in the community as a whole," said Park.
Royal Park USA is considering making furniture and home decor in the future.
