American Craft Beer Week Starts Monday

Raise your glass, Monday marks the start of American Craft Beer Week!

The craft beer community across the United States will celebrate the labors of love from brewers at small and independent breweries with events through Sunday.

The craft brewing industry has exploded in recent years. In February, North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory declared April "NC Beer Month". Within the last 10 years, North Carolina went from about 30 craft breweries to more than 100. And it's still growing.

North Carolina has also attracted larger-scale craft breweries, including Sierra Nevada and New Belgium. They are establishing operations in the Asheville area.

According to the Brewers Association, more than 110,270 people work at U.S. craft breweries and brewpubs. It says the industry's estimated retail dollar value in 2013 was $14.3 billion.

Unfortunately, there aren't any registered beer week events in the Triad. But, Nantahala Brewing Company, in Bryson City, is hosting an event Tuesday night. You can still visit your local breweries to show your support, or sample North Carolina's many delicious craft beers from Bestway in Greensboro.

Remember, enjoy your craft beers responsibly and don't drink and drive!
