Alamance County, NC -- The high price of fuel has some drivers avoiding the cost illegally.

Managers of the Flying J in Graham installed about six cameras in September. They said since then, drive-offs have reduced 75 percent. The cameras provide high-resolution, color images of all the pumps.

"I have a team in corporate, they look through the cameras, they kind of track the end of the previous sale right to the point of that sale and see what happened during the process. They give us accurate footage on who and what and when," said Mark Hiers, accounting manager at the Jimmie Kerr Road location.

Flying J managers then send the images to Graham police, who track down the owners of vehicles based on license plates.

Officers notify the owner of the vehicles caught on camera that they need to pay or face the penalty.

People who do not pay could be charged with a misdemeanor.
Since January 6, the Flying J has reported 36 gas larcenies to police.
