Greensboro, NC -- Hundreds of families and friends gathered in at the Koury Convention Center to give their official farewell to 190 national guardsmen who will soon deploy to Afghanistan.
The 881st engineer company is from a base in Rockingham County, and the 883rd engineer company is based out of Winston Salem. The troops will head to Southern Afghanistan in mid September.
This trip is extra emotional for 23-year-old Specialist Nicholas Dupelle and his family because he will deploy to Afghanistan for the first time.
"I've just been sitting down and talking with my family, working everything out and as long as I know that they're okay, I can get through it," said Spc. Dupelle.
"I'm not ready. I'm not ready for him to leave yet," said Shannon Dupelle, Nick Dupelle's wife.
The soldiers will heat to the base in Fort Bliss, Texas before heading to Southern Afghanistan. They will serve there for one year.
