Today is Veterans Day, and with the holiday to honor those that have fought and died for our country, there are many events going on to celebrate around the Triad, including free events specifically for veterans. A comprehensive list of events going on is below.
Free And Discounted Food At Area Restaurants (Most of the restaurants require evidence of service - Military ID, Veterans Organization Card, Photo of yourself in uniform or wear your uniform)
- Applebee's - All veterans and active duty military eat free from a limited menu on Veterans Day.
- Chili's - Veterans and active duty dine for free from a special limited six item menu on Veterans Day.
- Olive Garden - Veterans and active-duty military get a free entrée from a special menu on Veterans Day.
- Hooters - Veterans and active duty eat free off special menu. (Details and list of participating locations)
- TGI Friday's - Buy one, get one meal free for veterans and service members (Details)
- Subway - Free six ince sub at participating restaurants. Call ahead to confirm at your location.
- Outback - Veterans and active-duty military get a complimentary Bloomin' Onion and non-alcoholic beverage. (Details)
- Texas Roadhouse - Free meal from opening until 4pm. on Veterans Day. Served only at lunchtime. (Details)
- Krispy Kreme - Free donut for veterans and active military at participating stores

College Transition Assistance - Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) has a new military support services manager, Cynthia Joel, who assists military and veterans in transitioning to college, including admission and connecting with other veterans on campus. Free Bowling - Z Bowl Family Entertainment is offering a free hour of bowling to veterans, active duty military, and their families all day Friday. Z-Bowl is located in downtown Mebane, 103 South 5th Street.
Free Car Wash - The Black Dog Carwash will provide free car washes to veterans and current military service from 8:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Black Dog Car Wash is located at 5819 High Point Road in Greensboro.
Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) Flag Flying and Luncheon - At least 500 American flags will fly on Friday on the campus of GTCC's Jamestown Campus. A luncheon will be held at noon that is free for veterans in room 041 of Medlin Campus Center. For more information, contact Bob Burchette at 334-4822, Ext. 50065.
NC A&T: The Office of Veteran and Disability Support Services will have its 6th Annual Veterans Day Celebration Friday, November 11 at Noon. This event will be held in the Memorial Union - Stallings Ballroom. A&T faculty and staff who served in the United States Armed Forces will be recognized.. The guest speaker will be A&T graduate, Sgt. Melvin Kearney, class of 2007.
Lunch and Clothing Giveaway - The Hewitt Business Center will host a free lunch and clothing giveaway that is free for all veterans. The lunch is Friday from 12:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at 1001 South Marshall Street in Winston-Salem. For more information contact 725-3410.
Asheboro Choir Concert - Following the parade in Asheboro, the Asheboro Community Choir will perform at 5:00 p.m. on the steps of the Asheboro Courthouse located on Worth Street.
Caldwell Academy - Dr. Aldona Wos, former U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Estonia, will speak at Caldwell Academy's Veterans Day celebration on Friday. Breakfast begins at 8:30 a.m. and is followed by Dr. Wos's speech and presentations by students. For more information, contact Andrea Miller at 235-4612.
Pilot Club of Asheboro Luminary Display - Following the parade in Asheboro, the Pilot Club of Asheboro will hold a luminary display to honor veterans at 5:30 p.m. at the Randolph County Courthouse. For more information or to purchase a luminary, call 953-2561.
United Way of Greater High Point Veterans's Day Program - The United Way of Greater High Point is hosting a Veteran's Day program in the Green Hill Memorial Garden, located at 1700 Leonard Avenue in High Point, at 12:00 p.m. For more information, contact Julius Clark at 289-1942.
University of North Carolina Greensboro - Ceremony begins at 6 a.m. on the Elliott University Center West Lawn with a roll call of the over 6,300 men and women who have lost their lives in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Veterans Day Parade in Asheboro - The Randolph County Veterans Council will host a parade in downtown Asheboro at 4:00 p.m.
