Surry County, NC-- A truck driver is uninjured but his wreck is causing headaches for emergency workers and homeowners in Surry County.
John Shelton, with Surry County Emergency Management, said a flat truck hauling a large chiller to Eden, NC flipped on Highway 89. Shelton said the driver deliberately drove off the side of the road to avoid an overhead line, and that caused the weight to shift enough to roll the truck over.
The chiller fell off the truck and is lying in the middle of the highway. Shelton said the equipment, plus the truck flipping over has caused them to close that area to traffic. It's not expected to reopen until sometime on Saturday.
A crane will have to be brought in to get the chiller up, but not before a contractor can come out and assess the damage to the equipment, which may take a while Shelton said.
Shelton said he doesn't have an exact time of when the road will open, but is positive it won't be Friday night.
Detour around the area: If you're traveling East or West on Highway 89, get off on Reeves Mill Road, take Glass Road, which will then loop you back on Highway 89.
Shelton said most of traffic affect is residential.
