At 5:38pm, Scott Allen Choplin, 43, of Winston Salem, was traveling north on Highway 150, when a man in--what witnesses say-- was a maroon Kia Optima cut him off and headed north.

To avoid colliding with the man, Choplin swerved left and collided head-on with Mary Reavis Nelson, 77, of Clemmons, according to a Highway Patrol spokesperson.

The accident occured near the intersection of Central Rd. and Scottsdale Ln.

Nelson died on the scene.

Choplin was transported to Baptist Hospital, and according to recent reports, is in stable condition.

Witnesses say the unknown driver pulled over just up the road following the accident. He got out of his car, surveyed the scene from a distance, got back in his car and continued north.
