Shiner, Texas-- A man is dead after another man said he punched him repeatedly for abusing his daughter.
Saturday, investigators in Lavaca County, Texas told CNN the father caught the man in the act of sexually assaulting his 4-year-old daughter.
According to the father, he left his daughter inside the family's house during a social gathering, while other members were tending to horses.
The father said when he returned to the house, he heard his daughter screaming and caught the man in the act. He said to stop the attack on his daughter, he hit the man in the head several times.
The man was pronounced dead on the scene.
The 4 year-old victim was taken to a local hospital in Victoria, Texas to be checked out.
Lavaca County Sheriff Micah Harmon told CNN that the father admitted he only knew the suspect casually. The alleged abuser was known for his horse-grooming abilities and was on the farm to help.
The incident took place Saturday.
Harmon described the girl as "OK besides the obvious mental trauma."
The sheriff said they will consult with the District Attorney's office after their investigation to decide if the father will be charged.
Harmon described the dad as "very remorseful," adding that he didn't know the man was going to die.
Authorities not releasing the deceased man's name at this time and are checking to see if he had a criminal background.
