Gaston County, NC-- Gaston County EMS are responding to the scene of a freight train derailment along 8th Avenue in Cramerton.
Gaston County 911 told WBTV they got the call around 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of N. Main Street and 8th Avenue in Cramerton, emergency officials said.
According to Norfolk Southern (NS), the train had three locomotives and 121 cars. The number of cars that derailed were 19 and of those four were tankers carrying liquefied petroleum (LP) gas, or propane.
NS said no leaks were detected from the cars.
No one was hurt. The train operator and a crew member were the only people involved in the accident, and emergency crews told WBTV both are OK. Norfolk Southern said the train was headed from Linwood to Macon, Georgia.
There is no word yet why the train derailed.
Some neighbors were evacuated to the Fellowship Hall at First Baptist Church in Cramerton, as a precaution. Others were told to stay back 150 to 200 feet from the scene. The evacuation was lifted around 7 p.m.
