CHARLOTTE, NC -- Officials in Charlotte will spend $87 million to buy 22 new light-rail cars to expand their transportation system.
Charlotte City Council approved the plan to buy the cars, increasing the number of cars to 42.
The Charlotte Area Transit System expects to enter an agreement with the Federal Transit Administration this fall to complete the funding for the purchase. Making the purchase now allows Charlotte to take advantage of a discount.
The expansion of the light rail system is expected to cost more than $1 billion, to be paid for with federal, state and local funds.
The expansion expected to open in 2016 will allow the system to use three-car trains instead of the current two-car train limit.
Charlotte is getting $18 million to expand stations for longer trains.
