ARDEN-ARCADE, CA - A 24-year-old man and his 2-year-old son were attacked with a machete in an Arden neighborhood Wednesday afternoon.
The attack happened on the 2100 block of Bluebird Lane around 2:55 p.m., according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.
The suspect, identified as James Norman, 30, had stopped by the house to talk with the father when the two got into an argument, deputies said. Norman allegedly grabbed his machete and started swinging it at the two.
Neighbor Donaven Tolleson was home next door when he heard screaming and ran out to see what was going on.
"I was just sitting in here and heard a bunch of screaming and we went out," Tolleson recalled. "I see this guy swinging around this machete. I ran over, and he came at me, so I said, 'I'll be right back' and went over and got my shotgun and chased the dude off."
Norman was rousted from a hiding place down the street by a sheriff's K9 unit and taken into custody.
Deputy Jason Ramos said the 24-year-old victim suffered a cut on the back of the head and the toddler had a 3-inch to 4-inch cut on the leg. Both of their injuries were non-life threatening.
Relatives of the victims said both the father and son are recovering at UC Davis Medical Center. While both victims are expected to be okay, the father still has some swelling from where he took a blow to the head and the toddler underwent surgery on his leg.
Relatives also said Norman was a family friend and that he had been staying with the victims until about a week ago. They said he was back Wednesday to get his belongings. That's when an argument started, but it still isn't clear what started that argument.
Deputies recovered the machete and Norman was booked into Sacramento County Jail.
