SPRING HILL, Florida (WTSP) - Crime scene investigators from the Hernando County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are investigating the shooting of a disturbed woman who showed up at a private family gathering, naked and armed with a weapon.

On Sunday night, the Hernando County Sheriff's Office identified the woman as Inga Marie Swanson.

The incident happened around 1:45 Saturday afternoon on Orchard Way just north of County Line Road in the rural El Pico neighborhood of Spring Hill.

According to Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis, Swanson, who was not invited, arrived wearing nothing and was asked to leave. A Hernando County Sheriff's Detective and Tampa Police officer were both at the gathering off duty.

"They asked her to leave and after a while, she did leave and the detective called the Sheriff's Office to let us know there was a woman in the area who was acting irrational and naked," said Sheriff Nienhuis.

A short time later, investigators say Swanson returned, but this time was armed with a weapon, forcing the two off duty officers to take action.

"One or both of them fired their weapons and the woman is deceased," said the Sheriff Nienhuis.

Neighbors say what happened is uncharacteristic of their quiet rural neighborhood.

"It's just off the charts bizarre," said Steve Hulgin, who arrived home from a birthday party with his son to find the neighborhood filled with police cruisers. "It's just something you never hear of. Why was she naked? Why did she have a weapon? I'm just curious who she is."

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the investigation. They have not provided any information about what type weapon Swanson was carrying.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office identifies the officers involved as 31-year-old Detective Rocky Howard and 26-year-old Tampa Police Officer Bill Mechler. Both officers have been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
