Martinsville, Va-- A man from North Carolina was found on the side of a highway in Virginia seriously injured from dog bites.
Wednesday, the Martinsville/Henry County 911 Center received a call from a motorist who said a man was sitting on the shoulder of US 220 south of Ridgeway. The caller told dispatchers the man was bleeding.
Ridgeway Rescue Squad and deputies with the Henry County Sheriff's Office went the area and found the man. He told emergency responders that he had been attacked by two pit bulls. Investigators said the man had extensive injuries to his body.
The victim was identified as James Perry Gann, 52, of Stoneville, NC.
Gann was transported to the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville but was later transferred by helicopter to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He is currently undergoing surgery to repair the injuries he sustained.
Gann is listed in critical condition at Baptist Hospital, according to investigators.
Officers found the two pit bulls where the victim said the attack happened. The dogs are now in custody of the Henry County Animal Shelter where they are being quarantined.
