Greensboro, NC -- In two weeks the NC A&T State University's marching band will perform at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The Blue & Gold Marching Machine found out they were selected in April. They will be one of 11 marching bands in the 2012 parade out of the 150 applicants. In addition, they're only one of two collegiate bands chosen!

The band will perform in front of 3.5 million people in New York City and 50 million people are expected to watch on television.

With less than two weeks until they take the big stage, News 2's Liz Crawford met with some of the band about preparations.

Robert Moore, the Operations Director for the band said it cost $400,000 to take 280 members of the band to march through Manhattan. They've practiced for months and fundraised every chance they had.

This is the first time the university has even been invited to the Macy's parade so they'll be bringing pride but this year has a special purpose too.

"I think this is really something that New York is looking forward to especially after the trials and tribulations that these guys just went through recently," said Moore.

Do'trell Allen, the Head Drum Major and senior at A&T believes this is the biggest thing that's ever happened to the band.

Allen also explained that they hope to put smiles on the faces of so many people who have faced devastation after Hurricane Sandy. The band might even try to squeeze in some volunteering on their trip to NYC.

"Our main purpose is to serve. So if there's anything that we can do and we're allowed to do it, we'll make sure it gets done," added Allen.

Macy's Inc. offered this statement to News 2:

On Thanksgiving Day, we look forward to bringing the nation the same majestic event they have come to know and love for generations. The Macy's Parade will carry on featuring the best marching bands in the nation including Greensboro's own North Carolina A & T State University, as well as an incredible line-up of performers, giant balloons and floats. As it has during turbulent times in our history, we hope that the Macy's Parade serves as a beacon of hope and renewal to millions across the nation as they gather to give thanks and begin healing from the aftermath of this devastating storm.

280 members of the band are going to the parade.

The Blue and Gold Marching Machine is still collecting money to cover the $400,000 trip.
