WFMY -- An online wedding registry is helping victims of Hurricane Sandy.

After volunteering with the Occupy Sandy relief effort in New York, three young professionals decided there was something more they could do to help.

"We knew there needed to be a simple and easy way - with minimal logistical concerns - to tell the thousands of people that want to help what is needed most and provide them the means to ship the donation right to a distribution hub," said Alex Nordenson, one of the registry organizers.

Nordenson, his friend, John Heggestuen and girlfriend, Katherine Dolan, decided to start a wedding registry on Amazon.com. The registry is set up with items that are needed the most by victims in the affected areas.

The group is getting updates multiple times a day on items to add to the list from a coordinator of Occupy Sandy, a group that is at the forefront of relief efforts all around New York.

People have already used the registry to buy gloves, handwarmers, baby wipes and other pertinent items.

All items on the registry are shipped directly to the Occupy Sandy emergency relief hub, which is at the Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew in Brooklyn. Then, they're delivered to victims in affected areas.

"We felt extremely fortunate to be left unscathed after the storm hit. This encouraged us to find ways to help out the surrounding community that was in far worse shape," said Nordenson.

They've already received more than 15,000 donated items  through the registry.

"Ultimately, we wanted to help the effort in a unique and powerful way and were excited by the simplicity and social medial promotion potential of an online wedding registry," said Nordenson.

Here is how you can help:

1) Go to the registry: http://www.amazon.com/registry/wedding/32TAA123PJR42

2) Select as many items as you want, just like a normal wedding registry.

3) Make sure you select the listed Occupy Sandy address for shipping. If it doesn't auto populate, please enter it manually:
Church of St. Luke and St. Matthew
520 Clinton Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11238

4) The organizers ask that people pay for expedited shipping, so the victims can receive the items as soon as possible.
