Greensboro, NC -- Hundreds of people waited overnight to receive free dental services on Friday at the Greensboro Coliseum, some arriving as early as noon the day before.

The event organized, by the North Carolina Missions of Mercy, is expected to draw nearly 1,000 patients to receive cleanings and extractions for free.

The clinic was offering partial dentures, but due to overwhelming demand, they ran out of the capacity to provide these shortly after opening at 7:30 Friday morning.

The clinic will run until 5:30 pm on Friday, and resume on Saturday morning from 7:30 am - 3:00 pm.

Leroy Thomas lost his job as a metal worker in High Point two and a half years ago. Since then, he hasn't been able to afford dental care. When he heard about the free dental clinic, Thomas got in line early.

"I miss the idea of working...having a job," Thomas said. "I've had problems with my mouth since I lost my job. From that time on, I've never had any strong income."

Dentists pulled nine teeth out of Thomas' mouth. He left with some pain, but said he was incredibly grateful for the opportunity to get free dental work.

Lynn Wells volunteered at the clinic for the first time this year because she knows the down economy is making life difficult for so many people. "It could be me. It could be my neighbor. It could be someone in the family, teachers, nurses, that may have lost their jobs, or are working, and can't afford dental care," she said.
