Greensboro, NC-- Saturday, November 17, the Greensboro Police officers arrested a former Guilford County Schools (GCS) employee on charges related to inappropriate behavior with a student. The employee was a non-instructional staff member at Sedgefield Elementary School.
The alleged incident happened two years ago, but police were just recently made aware of it.
The suspect was identified by police as 47-year-old Jose Licinio Portillo-Urrutia. He is charged with:
First-Degree Sex Offense
Indecent Liberties With A Student
Crime Against Nature
Portillo-Urrutia is a former custodian for Sedgefield Elementary School. After being taken into custody he was booked in the Guilford County Detention Center under a $75,000.00 secured bond.
GCS sent out a news release about the arrest. School officials said they are working closely with the police on the investigation. When police let GCS know an arrest was imminent, the employee was contacted by human resources. The employee resigned Friday.
GCS takes any allegation involving employees acting inappropriately very seriously. Student and staff safety is a top priority. All employees and volunteers must go through a comprehensive background check before they are hired or allowed contact with students. In addition, the school district uses a system that runs local and state criminal checks every night. The Sedgefield principal sent a phone message to all parents and staff earlier today. A letter will also go home with all students on Monday.
