Raleigh, NC -- North Carolina state parks are staying open on Thanksgiving and all weekend for visitors who want to get off the sofa and into nature.
The state Division of Parks and Recreation says all 40 parks are open on Thursday, from Jockey's Ridge on the Outer Banks to Mount Mitchell in the west. The open spaces are available all weekend for a hike, paddle, bike ride, or one of the free, ranger-led interpretive programs.
Hikers are invited to a "Walk It Off!" event all day on Thanksgiving at Haw River State Park.
Lake Waccamaw State Park plans a program about wild turkeys Friday afternoon. Cliffs of the Neuse State Park holds an outdoor cooking class on Saturday. Lake James State Park offers tips on landscaping to attract wildlife on Sunday.
