Winston-Salem, NC -- A woman who cheered on Richard Petty for decades got the thrill of a lifetime Thursday when he delivered her lunch from Meals On Wheels.

The King showed up at Mary Lee Slawter's house as part of Senior Services of Winston-Salem's 50th anniversary.

With her hand on his knee, 96-year-old Slawter told Petty how she and her husband watched him race at Bowman Gray Stadium and down in Daytona Beach.

"Well, it was real good but they just didn't stay long enough," Slawter said with a laugh. "Oh, it was wonderful."

While Thursday's visit obviously held special meaning, Slawter says she values the time Meals On Wheels volunteers spend with her just as much as the food they bring.

That's one of the merits of the program that Petty praised.

"A lot of people live by themselves," he said. "And if you just opened the door and threw the food in, they'd appreciate that. But the people come in with the food, sit down and talk with the people. So, I think that's as [important] as the food part of it."

Meals On Wheels made its first delivery in Winston-Salem back in 1962. Senior Services says more than 1,200 people who are homebound get their meals from the program each weekday.
