Fayetteville, NC -- Police in Fayetteville have shot a man who held them at bay in a convenience store for about five hours and then left the store holding a rifle.

Fayetteville police spokesman Gavin MacRoberts says the man went into the store about 2:30 a.m. Friday and apparently was planning to rob the place. He barricaded himself inside after the clerk escaped through the door.

The incident ended around 7:30 a.m. when the suspect came out of the store holding a rifle and was shot by police.

The man was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. It was not immediately clear how seriously he was wounded or if any police officers were injured.

The man's name has not been released.
