Greensboro, N.C. - What's on your Christmas list? An iPad? A TV? It's nice to have something to look forward to, but some of our neighbors aren't asking for anything like that.
These families want something as basic as a mop. It's heartbreaking when you hear it. People struggling so much, that they have something like that at the top of their Christmas list. However, this is the reality at Greensboro's Interactive Resource Center (IRC).
Teresa Hicks works for the IRC center and she has a book full of wishes from local families in need. They're asking for simple things like pots, pans, toothpaste, baby lotion, food and mops. She wants to grant the wishes. But, she can't.
"I am very nervous. I am trying to hold my composure. It's getting close," Hicks said.
Donations are down and Hicks worries she will disappoint the families counting on her for Christmas.
"It's really sad to me," Hicks said. "I am on the edge right now."
Dalina London is a single mother. She lost her job and her family ended up homeless. So, she turned to the IRC for help.
"You want to be the provider for your kids. It's hard because you can't do it," London said.
Hicks helped her find a new place to live. Gifts from the center will be the only ones her children will receive.
"I no longer have to keep telling them that, 'I'm sorry, we're not going to have a Christmas this year,'" London said. "I've been crying. My children are upset and stressed...I've never been in this situation."
Hicks hears stories like London's every day. "Sometimes we may complain we don't have enough. But, when we have families that have nothing...that breaks my heart," she said. "I am looking for a miracle. I believe it. I believe we're going to get the help we need. That's all I can do - hope."
London has a temporary job now and will move into a home with her family before the end of the year.
She doesn't want a handout. However, if she wants her children to have a Christmas this year, the IRC is her only option.
