Mt. Airy, NC -- Police say a 9-year-old was killed following a police chase started by his juvenile sister Saturday night.
Just before midnight, an officer noticed a car speeding south on U.S. 52. The officer tried to make a traffic stop, but the 15-year-old girl led him on a chase.
The cars traveled onto U.S. 601, then onto Edgewood Drive, and finally onto Carter Street before the driver lost control. Her car ran off the right side of the road, hit a tree and fell into Ararat River, according to detectives.
Police say they will not release the minor's name, but she was taken to Northern Hospital, treated and released.
The 9-year-old died on the scene.
This accident is still under investigation.
Members of the Surry County Emergency Services, Mt. Airy fire department, Mt. Airy Rescue Squad, Surry County Sheriff's Office and the Highway Patrol assisted with the incident.
