RALEIGH -- A rock slide in the western part of the state, as well as holiday travel in major cities, could cause headaches this week across the North Carolina.

The Department of Transportation says one lane of I-40 West, near MM 7, in Waynesville is closed after a rock slide Friday night.

First Sgt. Jeff Gordon of the Highway Patrol said the lane is expected to reopen either later today or early Sunday.

Along with the delays from the rock slide, DOT is warning drivers of delays around major cities, thanks to holiday travel.

The department expects the heaviest congestion to be near Asheville, Winston-Salem, Charlotte, Fayetteville and Raleigh.

Drivers should expect delays from noon to 7 p.m. each day for the next week.
