Saturday night, authorities responded to Gideon Grove United Methodist Church on report of a fire. When they arrived, they found the more than 100 church engulfed in flames.
Fire fighters from nearly a dozen different stations worked into the morning to extinguish the fire. It wasn't until mid-morning that investigators were able to begin searching for a cause.
The church is a total loss but church members pulled the pulpit, and the brass cross from the alter out to the ashes.
"We have gathered together and we have prayed and we have sung as the Methodist tradition does and we're just healing and are going to move forward," said Rev. Wanda Lancaster, Gideon Grove United Methodist Church.
Members will meet at Palestine UMC until this church is rebuilt. Lancaster pastors both churches.
The cause of the fire is under investigation but Rockingham County Fire Marshall Robert Cardwell has called it "suspicious."
