Greensboro, NC -- Rudene Franqui was less than two miles from her daughter's home. But she couldn't make it back, and search crews couldn't find her until it was too late.
The 80-year-old grandmother who went missing Saturday was found at approximately 11:15am Monday after several extensive searches involving multiple police agencies.
"We are saddened to report that Ms. Franqui was not able to survive her time in the elements," said Deputy Chief Anita Holder.
A North Carolina State Highway Patrol helicopter crew spotted Franqui's body in a wooded area less than two miles south from her daughter's home on Windhill Court. The cause and approximate time of death are not known.
Franqui, who was believed to be suffering from dementia, was in Greensboro to visit family for the holidays. She was reported missing by her daughter at approximately 2:18 pm on December 29th.
Police believe Franqui may have boarded a bus or train in an attempt to return to her home in Georgia. They spotted her on surveillance camera footage from the Greensboro Transit Authority.
