Hurricane Sandy and Extreme Drought Drives Disaster Cost

Greensboro, NC -- As if Hurricane Sandy and the extreme drought across the nation's heartland wasn't enough, there were nine other disasters that cost the U.S. more than a billion dollars in 2012.

In total there were 11 weather/climate disasters in 2012 where the damages and cost for the event surpassed one billion dollars. Seven of the 11 events were severe weather or tornado event, two were related to hurricanes/post tropical cyclones and two were the year-long drought and associated wildfires.
