Greensboro, NC --If you drive, you know every few years you're required to renew your driver's license. You also have to renew your car registration annually. Now, a local lawmaker wants to see a similar system in place for gun permits.
The bill in still in the very early stages, but News 2's Lauren Melvin spoke with State Representative Alma Adams (D) about her plan.
Adams said it's something that would actually make sense.
"When we pass laws, we think that we're correcting a problem, but we don't look far enough down the road to see the kinds of things that possibly could happen to endanger the lives of other people and including the person who may own it," said Adams.
Adams said her bill would require folks who have gun permits to renew them regularly.
It would put a system in place to verify guns are truly in the possession of the person who bought them and determine the gun owner is not a threat.
Adams said she is now taking a closer look at what the current statutes are, what other states do to monitor the process of ownership and weapons, and she's trying to get support from her colleagues in Raleigh.
We asked her if she thinks a bill like this could pass.
"It's really going to be up to the people who are in charge. It's going to be up to my colleagues on the other side of the aisle. It's going to be up to the speaker. If they don't want to hear about it, the public won't hear about it," said Adams.
Once the bill is drafted, it will undoubtedly be amended along the way.
Adams said the idea for the bill actually came to her from a constituent.
