Raleigh, NC -- Republican Pat McCrory is now North Carolina's governor after his inauguration in the old state Capitol Saturday.

Chief Justice Sarah Parker administered the oath of office to the former Charlotte mayor in the old House chambers. McCrory is the state's first Republican governor since Jim Martin left office in 1993.

McCrory's wife, Ann, along with other family members and his incoming Cabinet, attended the event, which took place a week before the public inauguration.

McCrory chose to hold the ceremony early so his administration is in place as the Legislature convenes next week in the Raleigh.

This was McCrory's second attempt at taking over the governor's seat. He lost to former Gov. Bev Perdue in 2008. Perdue chose not to run last year, and McCrory defeated Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton in November.

Perdue also participated in Saturday's swear-in ceremony.
