NW Guilford Basketball Game Honors Maurice Edmonds II

Greensboro, NC -- Police say Northwest Guilford Middle School boys' basketball player Maurice Edmonds II was shot and killed by his mother on Monday. He was only 14-years-old.

After cancelling a game and basketball practice earlier this week, the basketball team decided to move forward with the game tonight against Jamestown Middle School.

The game started at 4:45 p.m. and was held in the Northwest High School gym to accomodate the large crowd. Admission will was free and players wore pink socks as a tribute to Maurice. Pink was his favorite color. Team members also had Maurice's number on their uniforms. The game began with a minute of silence to honor the eighth grader. There will also be a moment of silence to honor the eighth grader.

Students, staff and people attending the game also wore pink.

Youth Pastor Jonathan Spangler said, "I think it's a wonderful way for them to get together and share in this common event. It won't take their mind off of it because they're focusing it and dedicating it to him. But, it will be a great opportunity for them to share this event together."

Reggie Davis is one of Maurice's best friends. He's was also a teammate. Davis said Maurice would want his team to play the game Thursday night."I have to be a leader for everyone else. I have to be strong for everyone else and be that big brother," Davis said. ""It feels really good to know that everybody in this community comes together for one cause, and for one person. It takes a lot of courage and strength."

Principal Rich Thomae said this tragedy has taught all of his students an important life lesson.  "I can't even put into words the difficulty our community has been though. Our kids have stayed strong and supported each other. The community has been fantastic," Thomae said.
