Raleigh, NC -- The Connecticut school massacre is leading North Carolina's school board to look again at steps aimed at keeping safe 1.5 million public school students and more than 100,000 educators.

The National Rifle Association has proposed stationing an armed officer at every school to protect students. Members of the State Board of Education said Thursday it's time to find out how many of the 2,500 public schools already have a cop on campus.

The most recent survey is four years old, and it found a majority of high and middle schools had their own officer. Only one percent of elementary schools had a campus officer, but about one in five had a shared officer.

Twenty children and six adults were shot to death last month at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school.
