Raleigh, NC -- Volunteers along North Carolina's coast are walking through muck and going out on kayaks to rescue sea turtles that get stuck in sounds when the water turns cold, stunning them and leaving them helpless to save themselves.

Along Hatteras Island, one volunteer checks the water temperature each day. When it drops below 50 degrees, he alerts about 10 others who check for immobile green, Kemp's Ridley and loggerhead turtles.

The state Wildlife Resources Commission says more than 60 turtles have been rescued since just before Christmas, and most have survived. They're usually taken to the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island or the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital on Topsail Island.

Volunteer Liz Browning Fox on Hatteras Island says saving just one sea turtle helps the endangered animals.
