Greensboro, NC -- The weather elements will likely come together tonight for the area to receive it's first snowfall of the winter season.

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for the entire News 2 viewing area in North Carolina and Virginia. The warning implies a snow event is likely.

The changeover to snow will take place in the metro Triad between 7 pm and 9 pm. The changeover will take place a bit earlier north and west of the Triad.  The best chance of measurable snow will be between 9 pm and Midnight. The snow will taper off by 3 am.

In the Triad, snowfall amounts of 2" to 4" are expected. Higher amounts of 3" to 6" are possible over southern Virginia and the Foothills west of Winston Salem.

Since the ground is still quite warm for this time of year, the above amounts will not accumulate on roadways. However, there will likely be icy spots on colder surfaces like bridges and overpasses during the morning commute Friday.

Friday and the weekend will be sunny with a bit of a moderation in temperatures. Weekend highs will be near 50.
