Guilford County, NC -- The Higway Patrol is investigating a fatal car accident involving a local principal.

McMichael High School Principal Leigh Jones is recovering in a hospital after the Friday morning accident.  Troopers say 70-year-old Linda Neal Chandler, of Stokesdale, died.

Highway Patrol says the accident happened on U.S. 220 N just north of Highway 158 around 7:15 a.m. Trooper William Skinner said  Chandler was traveling south on U.S. 220 when her car crossed the center line and collided head-on with Jones' car.

Chandler later died at Moses Cone Hospital.  Jones' condition has not been released.

The Rockingham County School district sent WFMY News 2 an email confirming that Jones was involved in the accident.

Here's what Karen Hyler,  the school system's public information officer, said in a release:

Ms. jones and her family kindly request that you respect her privacy at this time. The Rockingham County Schools and McMichael High community send her best wishes for a speedy recovery."

WFMY News 2 will not go to the hospital, but we will keep you updated on this story on our air and on digtriad.com.

Students, meanwhile, have started an online prayer effort for their principal on Twitter.  They are tweeting #prayformsjones.
