Greensboro, NC -- Police are looking for as many as 32 stolen guns, including an M16 rifle and a .308 rifle, that were taken in recent burglaries.
Greensboro police Capt. Mike Richey would not say from where the guns were stolen, but did say they were part of two private collections. The guns were legally bought and owned, he said, and not the original targets of the break-ins.
The burglaries happened sometime between early evening on Jan. 13 and late morning on Jan. 14. In addition to the two assault rifles, seven low-caliber rifles, seven shotguns and four handguns are missing.
Finding these guns is among the top priorities for Greensboro's Criminal Investigations Division -- not simply because they're guns, but because of what a criminal might do with them.
"That's where our concern is," Capt. Richey said. "Simply the fact that someone who is willing to break in and steal from other people took these guns. So are they willing to do other things with [the guns] -- commit robberies, commit shootings, anything like that?"
The M16 has a custom camouflage paint job, investigators say, while the .308 is solid black. Crime Stoppers is looking for tips in tracking down information about the burglary. If you know anything that could help investigators, call Greensboro/Guilford Crime Stoppers at (336) 373-1000. There is a cash reward of up to $2,000 that leads to an arrest or indictment.
