Surry County, NC -- Wednesday afternoon, Gentry Middle School principal Paige Badgett received word that someone found a gun in a backpack at school. Upon investigation, Badgett found the gun, and took it out of the student's bookbag. There no word on whether or not the gun was loaded.
Sheriff Graham Atkinson and the Surry County Sheriff's Office got called in to handle the situation. The sheriff's department said there is no threat to students or staff on the campus. But they encourage parents to securely store their firearms and educate their children about firearm safety.
The sheriff's department isn't releasing the student's name due to their age. But the sheriff's department said juvenile petitions will be issued and school disciplinary policies will be followed in the process. The investigation is ongoing.
