Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Eric Wise led the way with 12 points as the
USC Trojans held off a late surge by the Arizona State Sun Devils to capture a
57-56 victory in a Pac-12 Conference showdown at the Galen Center.
Byron Wesley scored 11 points and J.T. Terrell netted 10 points for USC
(14-15, 9-7 Pac-12), which has won back-to-back games.
For ASU (20-10, 9-8), Jahii Carson led all scorers with 23 points to go along
with seven rebounds and four assists. Jordan Bachynski and Chris Colvin added
17 and 10 points, respectively, but the other six Sun Devils' players to see
action in the game combined for only six points.
USC built a 31-20 lead at halftime by shooting nearly 48 percent from the
field and holding ASU to just 37.5 percent shooting.
The Trojans led by as many as 16 in the second half before the Sun Devils
made their charge, as they brought their deficit to just three, 57-54, with 14
seconds remaining. Following a USC turnover, ASU cut the lead to one on a
Carson layup. Wise stepped to the free-throw line for USC with just four
seconds remaining, and although he missed the front end of a one-and-one,
Carson's game-winning 3-point attempt at the buzzer did not fall as the
Trojans escaped with the win.
ASU was plagued by a poor night shooting from 3-point range (1-of-12).
