"Before I got into this program, I didn't know what I was going to do. I was sitting at home twiddling my thumbs, saying I'll go fill out an application here, or fill out an application there and hopefully they will call me. Well, once I got into this program and I saw the demand they placed on the applicants to actually enter the program, that worry completely went away. I know for a fact when I finish I'm going to have a job," O'Neil said back in November.
WFMY News 2's Morgan Hightower
spoke with Devarian Monday, the day he was offered a job.
"They're looking for and yearning for a machinist. And for me to be placed in that category in such a short period of time, hey here's a machinist, you can use him... And they know when I'm coming and what i'm offering, it's pretty awesome," said O'Neal.
In just four months, Devarian became a machinist. He's one of the few workers who can design and build metal parts like what you find in a car or an airplane.
"I'll be writing programs and I'll be doing mass quantity production," explained O'Neal.
His entire class at GTCC either has jobs or they're close and these jobs can pay up to $5,000 dollars a month.
O'Neal starts Next Monday.
"I was one of those people growing up, I never thought I would go to college," said O'Neal. "Coming to this program kind of revamped that way i thought about college and now I want to continue my education."
He's planning on getting his associates degree and eventually a masters in mechanical engineering.
"So they set us up to do nothing else but succeed and I'm not twiddling my thumbs anymore. I'm kind of giving myself a hooray now!" said O'Neal.
There are positions available now for another free course.
