Winston-Salem, NC - Police in Winston-Salem will not charge a security guard who shot and killed a man at the Nitty Gritty Soul Cafe in February, citing self-defense.
The security guard killed Kenneth Braddy, a convicted felon unable to legally possess a firearm. Investigators say Braddy reentered the building after an event. Surveillance video shows Braddy pointing his gun in the direction of the two security guards. Braddy was shot multiple times and died.
A potentially over-capacity event held at the restaurant/club that Saturday night was not ending well prior to Braddy's death. As the event came to a close around 2am a fight started inside. Security guards began moving people to the parking lot.
While standing in the parking lot, several shots were fired. Three people, Cortez Smith, Barry Richardson, and Carmen Simmons were hit. People rushed back inside the building, including Kenneth Brady. That is when the video shows him with his gun and threatening the guards.
Police are still investigating who shot Smith, Richardson and Simmons.
Smith and Richardson have been released from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Simmons remains in the hospital in "stable" condition.
