Greensboro, NC - A North Carolina city will soon own a drone aircraft.
READ: Monroe Plans to Buy Drone For Police Department
The Monroe City Council unanimously voted to approve the purchase of an unmanned aircraft to be used by the city's police department.
Monroe is in Union County and will be the first city in North Carolina to purchase a drone. However, they aren't the first to consider it.
Col. Randy Powers with the Guilford County Sheriff's Office tells WFMY News 2's Morgan Hightower his office has considered purchasing a drone.
High costs, regulations and rules have tempered their interest.
"Is it a useful tool? Yes it is. Is it something that can be used everywhere? Not necessarily. A lot has to do with the area that you're working in and what you're doing," explained Powers.
Powers says there are a lot of questions about when and where you can use them though and a lot of citizen concern about the safety.
"I don't see ever local law enforcement to ever be able to use those to fire some type of weapon from the drone," explained Powers.
Monroe is purchasing the drone with drug seizure money. It will cost $44,000.
