Surry County Man Killed In Tractor Accident

Lowgap, NC -- A man died while trying to start his tractor in Surry County Saturday, according to Surry County EMS.

Director John Shelton says 73-year-old William Leonard Hodges was starting his tractor off Haystack Road around 3 p.m. when the left rear wheel grabbed and pulled him under the tractor.

Hodges died almost immediately at the scene.

Shelton said Hodges was operating a mid-sized John Deere tractor at the time of the accident.

Skull Camp Fire and Rescue, worked with squads from Mt. Airy and Dobson, as well as Surry EMS on the incident.
