Boone, NC -- More than 100 people have been arrested for charges related to underage drinking in the high country area around Appalachian State University, the NC Department of Public Safety announced Monday.
Authorities said they began their operation after an Appalachain State student died as a result related to alcohol last September.
Alcohol Law Enforcement agents arrested 103 people on 155 charges including: underage possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages, aiding and abetting underage possession of alcohol and using fraudulent ID to obtain alcohol.
More than 30 fake IDs obtained via the Internet and sources outside of the US were seized by ALE agents. Underage offenders also used legal IDs of other people 21-years-old and older.
"Underage consumers using a fraudulent identification document to buy alcoholic beverages are putting their own life and other lives at risk," said Kieran Shanahan, secretary of the Department of Public Safety, in a news release. "Purchasing, possessing and consuming alcoholic beverages not only is a violation of the law, it could cost people their lives."
