Florida-- Throwing your boss a surprise birthday party is not necessarily a bad idea, if everyone is on board with it and you have the money.
However, throwing your boss a surprise birthday bash and using money that you've been skimming from the company is a very bad idea.
That's what police and a woman's boss is accusing her of doing. According to a police report, Ruth Amen is facing felony embezzlement charges after throwing her boss a surprise birthday party. The party raised suspicious about where the funding came from.
Her manager decided to look into her practices. Amen who was the officer manager for more than 10 years was arrested Monday night after an investigation by the Lee County Sheriff's Office Economic Crimes Unit found she'd stolen close to $182,000 from her company Gulf to Bay Realty.
Investigators said Amen used nearly $92,000 in company finances to pay personal credit card debt and issued herself 'extra' paychecks totaling $65,000 and failed to deduct the cost of insurance from her paychecks.
Amen was charged with Grand Theft and Scheme to Defraud, both charges are First Degree Felonies.
The company, Gulf To Bay Sotheby's International Realty Inc., sells and rents high spec properties in Boca Grande, Sanibel, Captiva, North Captiva and Fort Myers Beach.
