  • Eden, NC-- A pregnant woman is recovering after doctors performed a surgery on her unborn son who was diagnosed with spina bifida early on in her pregnancy.

Emily Raines and her husband are awaiting the birth of their son, Brantley. Emily is 31 weeks pregnant but in February she and her baby underwent extremely rare surgery at North Carolina's Children's Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC.

Emily told WFMY News 2's Liz Crawford that the surgery can only be performed at two other places, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt.

Before the surgery, Brantley had a lemon shaped head due to spinal fluid leaking from a hole in his back. During the surgery, they closed the holeand his head has since returned to normal size. This minimizes the need for a shunt to drain fluid due to hydrocephalus.

Doctors told Emily she is likely to deliver Brantley between 32-34 weeks. If not, she has a c-section planned for May 17th. She's currently 31 weeks pregnant. With no complications, Emily's original due date was June 6th.

Emily and her husband are sharing their journey so far with WFMY News 2.
