Burlington, NC - Police in Burlington said responding to a burglary called may have prevented a rape.
Officers said they were called to the home on Grace Avenue about 11:59 pm for a burglary in progress. The front door appeared to be forced open and officers heard a woman screaming inside the home. Jerry Lee Johnson tried to run from police after officers said he assaulted and tried to rape the woman.
Johnson, who has two warrants from Virginia for Failing to Register as a Sex Offender and one for Failure to Appear in Court in Alamance County, was placed in the Alamance County Jail under a $250,500 secured bond.
He was charged with First Degree Burglary, Attempted Second Degree Rape, Assault on a Female and Interfering with Emergency Communications for this incident.
