Greensboro, NC -- Guilford County has two floors of its new $100 million jail closed because of a lack of funding.
The News & Record of Greensboro reported that two floors of the eight story building are closed because of a lack of staff.
The jail that opened last year has just over 1,000 beds and was designed to meet the county's needs until 2025. The old jail had nearly 400 beds.
Officials say they would need to increase staffing from 236 officers to 312 to staff the whole building.
The jail director, Maj. Debora Montgomery, says she's lost 41 of 96 detention officers hired for the opening of the jail. Montgomery says the new employees have left for a variety of reasons, including the stress of the job.
