Greensboro, NC -- "Mayors Against Illegal Guns" are taking the next step toward taking a stand against gun violence.

On Friday, Greensboro Mayor Robbie Perkins and concerned citizens delivered 39,259 gun reform petitions to Sen. Kay Hagan's office. Supporters are calling for Congress to enforce stricter background checks and pass tougher gun laws.

WFMY News 2 met Danalee Hines Friday; she says the man who killed her husband used an illegal gun, and that's why she's demanding change.

"I whole-heartedly believe in the second amendment. We all have rights in this country. And my daughter had the right not to have her father taken away from her, due to gun laws that need to be strengthened," said Hines.

The petitions were drop off around 2p.m. Sen. Hagan's office says she is for stricter background checks, but she's unlikely to vote for an assault weapson't ban.

Other events were held in Charlotte, Durham and Raleigh as a part of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns campaign.

"New laws will just waste time," said Carl Abbe of Calibers Indoor Range who is a gun owner and opponent of the campaign. "And what we need is to enforce the laws out there. And not take the guns away from honest citizens."

No matter which side you are on, you can have your voice heard. Just call your lawmakers.
