Gastonia, NC --Caromont Health in Gastonia issued the following news release, Friday concerning it's decision to adopt the slogan, "Cheat Death."

Gaston County Commissioners have asked the hospital to drop the slogan, saying it has embarrassed the region.

Cheat Death. A community health movement to improve overall wellness.

The following information was provided by Caromont Health: Children growing up today are at risk of being the first generation in American history that won't live longer than their parents. Let's get angry about that.

The greatest challenge in healthcare is getting people to pay attention. Americans are largely focused on healthcare as a cure. That has to change. Our focus needs to be on preventing disease. We need to help people take an active role in living better, longer and healthier lives. We can help save people's lives when they come to us sick or injured. But the best way is to prevent illness and injury in the first place.

That's what "Cheat Death" is all about. The tagline is being taken out of that context. We are not saying we can stop death. What we are saying is that if you take an active part in your own health-being more active, making better nutritional choices, stop smoking-you can live a longer, healthier and ultimately happier life.

We are in the middle of a healthcare crisis. Gaston County is the 81st healthiest county in North Carolina. Any way you look at it, that's bad news. What we've done to address this up to now hasn't worked.

Our community needs a health revolution. To do that, we have to get the attention of every women, man and child in Gaston County. This is their life we're talking about. We're passionate about saving it or bettering it. We needed an initiative that would wake people up to the crisis before us. We have to boldly challenge people to partner with us to live longer.

Physicians and nurses save lives every day. They are truly heroes. That's what hospitals and medicine is all about.

What health care overall has to be about is preventing lifestyle diseases that are increasing among adults and especially children at an alarming rate. We want to do everything possible to stop this trend. We can't do it alone. But we can provide every man, woman and child in Gaston County the opportunity to live longer and healthier. We can give them the opportunity to cheat death.
