Lexington, NC -- A retired US Army Veteran who raised a family with a legacy of military tradition, died last weekend. However, it had nothing to do with his military service.

Retired First Sergeant Matthew Nagel died in a tree trimming accident, according to Theo Helm with Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools. First Sergeant Nagel worked at Parkland High School as a JROTC instructor for four years.

Students returned from Spring Break last week. Administrators notified students and staff about his death in an announcement Monday morning at the school. Helm said counselors were available on campus.

In February, WFMY News 2 first told you about Nagel and his family. Every member of his immediate family serves or has served in the military. Nagel's wife, Rhonda, is a veteran of the Navy, Navy Reserves and Army Reserves. Together they raised three sons: Matthew, Christopher and Jonathan.
